Johann Hari: The looming threat of terror that comes from the far right

The threat comes not from jihadis but 'neo-Nazis' out to kill black people, Jews and gays

Britain is facing the real risk today of a bombing campaign that targets random civilians for death – but it is being virtually ignored. When its supporters step closer every day to mass murder, nobody notices. When its perpetrators are caught, there is (at best) a little flick of information in News in Brief, before everyone goes back to talking about the Strictly Come Dancing race row. This silence suggests something dark about us – and requires us to change our behaviour, fast.

The campaign I am talking about is not being planned by jihadis or fringe Irish nationalists but by white "neo-Nazis" who want to murder Asians, black people, Jews and gays in the bizarre belief it will trigger a "race war".

U.S. Marines Land at Guadalcanal

In the first major offensive against Japan, Marines storm the beaches of Guadalcanal, in the Solomon Islands, in August 1942. The Allied victory here put Japan on the defensive for the rest of the war. See LIFE photographer W. Eugene Smith's extraordinary pictures from the war in the Pacific.

Babes of the BNP

This month’s “Babes of the BNP” blog exploded the internet, sending a shower of bits, bytes and unpleasant debate raining through our office like an uncapped oil well. Some felt that the she-wolves of the far right didn’t get a fair hearing last time out. So, in the interests of political correctness (gone mad?), we invited Rebecca Edwards back to offer her fragrant wit and wisdom on the flipside of fame. It’s like Jordan vs. Piers Morgan all over again.

Damp Gnat

Thom Yorke and Flea

The news that Thom Yorke had come to Los Angeles and formed a temporary supergroup with Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers was surprise enough to most Radiohead fans. Most were intrigued, but for those concerned with rock credibility it was like hearing that the chaps from Peep Show were taking a break to write a show with Jim Davidson, or that Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall was collaborating with Bernard Matthews on a turkey burger.

Expelled Exposed

Culture wars. The Enlightenment has been under attack since its inception. Take a look at the list of books that the Vatican banned, it’s Index Librorum Prohibitorum and yep, it’s a pretty good reading list! Ban, lie and obfuscate continue to be the watchwords of organised religion.
Ironic that the first country to enshrine the Separation of Church and State into their constitution are so besieged by anti-intellectual religionists.

In a few days a grotty little ‘film’ will be released into the world, like a bird-turd dropping into your beer. That mealy-mouthed homunculus Ben Stein ( who’s most worthwhile contribution to culture is saying “Bueller ? Bueller…?” in nasally, brain-dead, monotonous whine) is fronting a film called Expelled : No Intelligence Allowed. It is essentially a tissue of dishonesty, lies, and untruths in the name of Creationism. Yeah, I know, it’s the 21st century. Doesn’t seem to matter to these people.

Maybe I’ll write more tomorrow, suffice to say that there is something sinister going on with these nutcases…

Meanwhile, I’m joining with the reality based community by adding ” Expelled ” links in an effort to big up the google rating for Expelled Exposed, organised by the magnificent Eugenie Scott, herself interviewed for the film ” Expelled ” under false pretenses. I urge you to do the same.

Dawkins has a go here.
